UW-L’s unique textbook rental program allows students to check out textbooks from its extensive collection for just under $86.96 per semester — a savings of almost $500 per year.

The pocketbooks of UW-La Crosse students can rest easy when it comes time to get new textbooks.
According to the National Association of College Stores, the average college student spent $662 on textbooks during the 2011-12 school year. UW-L’s unique textbook rental program allows students to check out textbooks from its extensive collection for just under $86.96 per semester — a savings of almost $500 per year.

The segregated fee covers all books available in the textbook rental system, but some students must purchase texts from the UW-L Bookstore, according to University Bookstore Manager Carlena Goddeau. Whether a text is placed in the rental system or in the bookstore depends on what titles qualify in the Textbook Services Policy.
“Also, in some cases, an instructor may want students to purchase a book so that they will be able to keep it for future reference,” Goddeau explains.
Since nearly all of UW-L’s 10,200 students use the textbook rental system, lines can form if they decide to turn their books in at the same time. Goddeau says the best way to beat the lines is to avoid the busiest times for returns — 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, and Wednesday, Dec. 18.
Students can also turn books in early — and at different times.
“You can return the books you will not need for the rest of the semester now, and return the rest later,” says Goddeau.
When returning books, students must reshelve the books themselves after checking them in. If books are not shelved properly in the correct location, the student will be fined $1 per book to the student's account.
Textbooks can now be returned during textbook rental hours. The deadline for returning fall 2013 semester books is 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19. For a complete list of deadlines and hours, visit uwlax.edu/textbookrental/hours.htm.
