Traditional Korean music will be highlighted at UW-La Crosse when the Danullim Gayageum Ensemble from South Korea brings its "Korean Wave-Globalization of Korean Traditional Culture 2017" to campus March 22-24. Native to South Korea, the Danullim Gayageum Ensemble specializes in Korean gayageum music. Gayageum is considered the most representative Korean string instrument that dates back to the 3rd century. Gayageum performers pluck and flick the strings with their fingers on right hand while controlling various articulations on the strings with their left hand. The traditional 12-stringed gayageum is tuned to pentatonic scale, which emphasizes five tones. The Danullim Gayageum Ensemble also specializes in 25-stringed gayageum, which is a 20th century addition. Under the musical director, Jaedong Hong, Danulllim Gayageum Ensemble will present Korean traditional instrumental and vocal music, as well as fusion music. A masterclass with Jaedong Hong, director of the ensemble will be held from 1:10-2:05 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, in Room 56 Center for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public. Two Korean traditional music performances are planned. The first begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22. The second runs from 12:05-1 p.m. Friday, March 24. Both are in Hesprich Auditorium in Graff Main Hall. The events are free and open to all. The performance tour is founded by the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Foundation (KoTPA) and through a UWL College of Liberal Studies Grant.
