In early November, Gov. Scott Walker announced the appointment of Gary Roberts, of Onalaska, president and CEO of the Morrison Creek Cranberry Corp. in Warrens, Wis.
Roberts earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology from UW-L. He went on to manage and own restaurants including, Piggy’s Restaurant in La Crosse from 1997-2001. He has also served on various community boards including the La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce.
"It is important for the Board of Regents to have Western Wisconsin representation," said Walker in an email. "Gary has been actively involved in his community for years. I'm confident he will use his experiences to help improve the UW System."
The governor appoints 14 citizen members and two student members to serve seven-year terms and two-year terms, respectively, on the board. Their appointments are subject to confirmation by the Wisconsin State Senate.
The 18-member board is charged with appointing the president of the UW System, chancellors and deans. They also set admission standards and approve university budgets, among numerous other tasks.
