The Department of Exercise and Sport Science will look back at its early years — and into the future during the series of special programs. Professor Emeritus A.B. Culver will open the series with a presentation on “The Walter Wittich Years” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in Port O’ Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Admission is free. Walter Wittich joined the then-La Crosse State Teacher’s College staff in 1916, shortly after the university opened in 1909 and the school of physical education was established in 1913. During his 37-year career, Wittich eventually directed the school of physical education, headed innovative curriculum changes, established the physical education minor, and laid the groundwork for the graduate studies and a recreation minor. The campus’ first physical education building was named for him. Following the historical presentation, exercise and sport science students will give walking tours of Wittich Hall at 11 a.m. A tailgate party at noon in the stadium parking lot will be held prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff of the UW-L football game against UW-Whitewater. Historical presentations about the department will be held throughout the academic year.
