Guitarist Jon Meier will be featured in a Pat Metheny piece at the UW-L Jazz Ensembles concert Oct. 22.
Jazz Ensemble I’s program will include music from the 1930’s Big Band Swing to present-day compositions. “The Swizzle”, a romping swing composition by Benny Carter, will feature James Jewson on trumpet and Jordan Faye on tenor sax.
The rhythm section and pianist Luke Thering will be featured on the George Stone composition, “Straight Ahead.” The band will also perform Pat Metheny’s composition, “Minuano” featuring guitarist, Jon Meier and trumpeter Geritt Van Ruiswyk.
Other selections will include “There, There,” a composition by the British rock band Radio Head, and a Wisconsin premier of “May or May Not” by David Von Kampen.
UW-L Jazz I is under the direction of Karyn Quinn. Quinn, who has taught in the UW-L Music Department since 1989, is in her first year as director of the UW-L Jazz Studies program. She follows Professor Greg Balfany, who developed and then led the program for nearly 35 years.
Jazz Ensemble II, under the direction of Scott Bean, will perform the popular Basie classic “Moten Swing” featuring Jordan Stokka, in the role of Count Basie. Tenor saxophonist, Anton Lenertz will be featured soloist on the Jerome Kern composition “All The Things You Are.” Other selections to be performed by Jazz II include “Act Your Age” by Gordon Goodwin and “A Little Piece” by contemporary writer David Springfield.
