UW-L lightens up with new, energy-efficient lampposts

Posted 10:26 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2012

UW-L will be a little bit brighter and more energy efficient by the end of summer, says Matt Lewis, executive director of Facilities, Planning and Management. The campus is replacing all the lampposts that illuminate pedestrian walkways south of Badger Street over the course of the summer. Crews have already started digging holes and connecting cables for the new posts. The new lights will likely be completely installed by the end of the summer. Then, the old lights will be removed. The new lampposts will have LED light fixtures and will be 30 to 40 percent more energy efficient than the old lights, says Lewis. The light fixtures are designed to add more light to walkways while not increasing light pollution in the surrounding area. The new posts will also have a vintage, decorative style similar to the lights around Eagle Hall and the stadium.
