UW-La Crosse has again reached a record enrollment this fall with 10,558 undergraduate and graduate students.

UW-La Crosse has again reached a record enrollment this fall with 10,558 undergraduate and graduate students. This is about 130 more students than in fall 2013, which was also a record.
“We’re thrilled that student interest is so high and that families throughout Wisconsin, the region and the world continue to choose UW-L for their university experience,” says UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow.
Higher enrollment means more graduates for Wisconsin, which reflects the university’s commitment to helping meet future needs of employers around the state.
“Modest enrollment growth is central to the university’s plan to produce more graduates, yet maintain a very personalized student experience, which is at the heart of all we do,” notes Gow.
Through the Growth, Quality and Access plan, started in fall 2008, the university has been able to increase faculty and student support staff as student enrollment increases. In fact, the faculty growth has surpassed student growth, lowering the university’s student-to-faculty ratio from 24:1 to 20:1 over the last six years.
UW-L’s record student population this fall is the result of continued enrollment growth over the last six years. In fall 2013 the university had the largest incoming class since 1986 with 1,990 new, first-year students. This fall first-year student numbers are slightly lower with 1,980 new incoming students.
Student recruitment and enrollment is competitive, especially as the number of high school graduates in Wisconsin continues to decline each year, notes Corey Sjoquist, UW-L director of Admissions. Some UW System schools were unable to meet enrollment targets.
“Fortunately, UW-L was again successful in enrolling a strong class of new students despite these challenges,” says Sjoquist. “An important reason for UW-L's success is that many individuals across campus have played a critical role in the university's recruitment efforts.”
Sjoquist says factors that contribute to an increase in enrollment include: UW-L's strong reputation, quality academic programs, vast opportunities for student involvement, the beauty of the La Crosse area and continuous university outreach and recruitment efforts throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest.
UW-L consistently attracts an academically talented student population. The class of 2018 has a median ACT score of 25 and a median class rank at the 80th percentile.
UW-L's campus is also culturally diverse. This fall the university has 320 international students enrolled in classes.
The university is not planning to grow much larger as it is limited by physical space, says Gow. At 128 acres, the UW-L campus is the smallest acreage-wise in the UW System.
