UW-L has again been recognized as a “best value” among the nation’s public colleges.
Kiplinger’s Personal Finance February 2011 issue has given the university the honor by recognizing it in its Top 100 list of schools with “top-flight academics and affordable costs.”
According to the article, UW-L is ranked No. 43 nationally based on its cost for in-state students and No. 41 for those who live out of state among more than 500 public, four-year colleges and universities. UW-L’s in-state rankings were the same from a year earlier, while the 2010 ranking was No. 34 for out-of-state students.
Despite shrinking budgets, schools making Kiplinger’s Top 100 list are noteworthy for being able to “deliver a stellar education at an affordable price.” Among the criteria in which the schools were judged were quality of students as measured by the academic performance of the incoming freshman class, admission rates, freshman retention rates, student-faculty ratios and graduation rates. They were also graded by how much they cost and how much financial aid the school offers to students.
“These latest Kiplinger rankings remind us that our faculty and staff continue to provide UW-L students with an outstanding academic experience at a very affordable price—even when state funding has declined so dramatically," says UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow. "We remain the top ranked UW System comprehensive institution, and we are rated above flagship universities in neighboring states including Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. This is why it is so important for our legislators to avoid further cuts in state support for our university. I couldn’t be more proud of the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students.”
Last fall, U.S.News & World Report ranked UW-La Crosse No. 2 among Midwest public colleges. UW-L has consistently landed in the upper half of Kiplinger’s Top 100 for more than a decade.
The only other Wisconsin schools to make the 2011 Kiplinger’s Top 100 were UW-Madison, No. 9 for in-state students, and UW-Eau Claire, which is No. 68.
