A recital at UW-La Crosse is being dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the La Crosse-Dubna Friendship. “The Soul of Viola” is the Guest Artist Recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in Annett Recital Hall, Center for the Arts. Violist Busya Lugovier will perform accompanied by Mary Tollefson, a pianist and UW-L faculty member. The recital is free and open to the public. The program includes an all-Russian half with works by Glazunov, Shostakovich and Schnittke, and two sets of compositions in the second half, a set of Hebrew Melodies by Joachim and “Pensiero and Allegro appassionato” by Bridge. Lugovier was born and educated in the former USSR. She was a member of the Dubna Trio, which was the first delegation to come to La Crosse after the Cold War between the U.S. and Russia. The Dubna Trio played an instrumental role in the Sister City project for La Crosse-Dubna in helping to build bridges of understanding between cultures. Currently, Lugovier coaches chamber music in the La Crosse School District, teaches students privately and plays with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. Tollefson, a native of Nebraska, has been teaching at UW-L for 20 years. Her many performances include both solo and collaborative recitals. Among other courses, Tollefson teaches piano, piano pedagogy and music appreciation at UW-L.
