[/caption] La Crosse, Wis. – UW-La Crosse students in the sorority Alpha Phi are helping to haunt a house this Halloween while raising money for the Boys and Girls Club of Sparta. Students helped decorate and play spooky characters at the “House of Shadows,” a haunted house in Sparta. The annual fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Sparta is open every Friday and Saturday in October. Tours will continue this coming Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22, as well as the Friday through Monday of Halloween weekend. House of Shadows is located at 501 Osborne Drive in Memorial Park in Sparta. The event raises about $40,000 annually for the Boys and Girls Club, says Paul Solberg, co-chair of the event. A volunteer committee starts planning the annual event in January and about 50 people volunteer each night, says Solberg. He’s thrilled to have students from UW-L. Toria Kucera, a UW-L senior and member of Alpha Phi, says she successfully scares most folks when she jumps out from the darkness as a zombie. While she thoroughly enjoys scaring, she also likes to be able to give back to the community. “It’s a great way to get out in the community and break down the stereotypes of what a sorority girl is,” she says. Tickets range in price from $6 for the “faint of heart” to $8 for a “very scary” pass. $15 gets visitors to the front of the line.
