The 8th annual St. Baldrick’s charity event to raise money for childhood cancer research is set for March 7.

Last year UW-L’s St. Baldrick’s event raised $30,000 for childhood cancer research after more than 100 people turned out to have their heads shaved.
This year the organizing group from Coate Hall is looking to generate the same buzz.
The 8th annual St. Baldrick’s event will be from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Recreational Eagle Center. Anyone is welcome to participate, donate or watch. The event will raise money for childhood cancer research.
“You get to watch people shave their heads and even hear some personal stories as to why they are participating,” says Andrea Coxey, a UW-L student organizer from Coate Hall. “It’s emotional, but in a good way.”
All hair is donated. Shaving also allows participants to show their solidarity with those suffering from childhood cancers. UW-L’s St. Baldrick’s events have raised nearly $121,000 for childhood cancer research since they started in 2007. Nearly 800 people have turned out to shave their heads.
Funds are donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to funding childhood cancer research.
Coate Hall Director Lisa Weston expects about 150 people to turn out this year to have their hair cut or shaved, while 30 others will work to raise money without shaving or cutting.
More than 30 UW-L students help make the event a success.
“Since it is for such a great cause, we love to be able to continue the tradition,” says Coxey.
