UW-L's Department of Theatre Arts to perform Broadway musical sensation "Spring Awakening."

Spring Awakening artwork. A ravishing rock score sets the mood for UW-L's Department of Theatre Arts performance of the Broadway musical sensation "Spring Awakening." The electrifying tale of four teenagers exploring their sexuality in a repressive society opens Friday, March 1. Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25. "Spring Awakening" conveys the poignant, compelling stories of struggling youth. Wendla, a girl of 14, desperately seeks to learn about womanhood from a mother who, embarrassed, brushes the questions aside. Wendla’s innocence leads her into the arms of Melchior, a rebellious 17-year-old boy from town, forcing her down an unchangeable path. Melchior’s school friend, Moritz, also faces the stresses of academia, parental disappointment and suppressed anger eventually driving him to self-harm. Meanwhile, Martha confesses the physical abuse she lives with daily to the other school girls, pleading they keep it a secret. Although these teenagers may struggle, they find hope and strength when they need to.
The music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater bring to life these teenagers’ struggle with raging hormones, parental disappointment, abuse and ambiguous sexual desires.
"Spring Awakening" performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, through Saturday, March 2; and Thursday, March 7, through Saturday, March 9; with matinee performances at 2 o'clock Sundays, March 3 and 10; in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts.
