The UW-La Crosse Water Ski and Wakeboard Team is making some big waves.
The group was voted the 2011 National Collegiate Water Ski Association Team of the Year among 72 collegiate teams throughout the nation.
“Receiving the honor really topped off our incredible season. I never imagined us being as successful as we were,” says Jemma Wahl, UW-L Water Ski and Wakeboard Team president. “It was truly a year of growth for us in all areas of our team.”
NCWSA representatives from across the country selected UW-L’s team for the honor because it stands out among peers as a model of organization and performance, says Christy Kingsmill, Midwest regional chairperson of the Midwest Collegiate Water Ski Association.
The Water Ski Team was undefeated in tournaments throughout the Midwest this fall. Members went on to win first place in the Midwest Regional Championship, earning their first trip to the Division I National Water Ski Championship in Zachary, La. on October 13-15. In the national competition, they placed ninth overall among 22 teams including other Division I schools such as Louisiana State University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Arizona State University, Purdue University, Texas A&M and Ohio State University.
“UW-La Crosse was an example to not only its peers in the region, but also helped show teams in other regions how hard work and perseverance can help attain a goal,” explains Kingsmill.
UW-L’s team will be recognized with a crystal trophy of achievement at the USA Water Ski Awards Ceremony Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, in Orlando, Fla.
“Everyone really came together, and we had tremendous support from the ski community around us,” says Wahl. “It was an honor to be able to lead during such an exciting season, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for our skiers!”

The UW-L Water Ski and Wakeboard Team is a group of UW-L students of varying abilities who come together because of their love of water sports. Members compete in tournaments throughout the Midwest from September to mid-October and again when the ice thaws through May. Water skiers compete in three-events: slalom, trick and jump skiing. Wakeboard team members compete in separate competitions during the same time period. Students of all skill levels are welcome to join and no equipment is necessary.
