The Festival of Languages runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the Hall of Nations in Centennial Hall. Admission is free.

Faculty, students and others will have the chance to learn more about languages and cultures during the Festival of Languages at UW-La Crosse.
“Our goal is to celebrate languages,” says Laurence Couturier who manages the university’s Language Resource Center. “We’re hoping students and others come to find out about the many offerings in the Modern Languages Department.”
Couturier, who teaches French, says it is important for students to know other languages and cultures. "The study of languages represents a crucial link in the global world that students are preparing to enter," Couturier explains.
Couturier is coordinating the event with Shelley Hay, assistant professor of German in the Modern Languages Department. They hope the festival will expand and become an annual event.
The Festival of Languages runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the Hall of Nations in Centennial Hall. Admission is free.
The festival aims to be social, fun and informative. Among the events scheduled:
• Merengue and Tango lessons
• Zumba dancing in French
• Poster presentations on French culture
• Chinese calligraphy and paper-cutting
• Round table discussion on "Russia-Ukraine relations" (10:30-11 a.m.)
• German games.
• Hands-on activities
• Music
• Food tasting
• Unique artifacts from China, Russia, Europe and South America
• Language programs information
• Language Resource Center information
• Language clubs options
The Department of Modern Languages currently offers courses in Arabic, Chinese,
French, German, Hebrew, Hmong, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and TESOL (Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages). Approximately 1,000 students are enrolled in classes that range from beginning to advanced language levels.
