Campus moves up to No. 49 on the magazine’s prestigious list UW-La Crosse is one of only two public colleges in Wisconsin to make “Kiplinger's Personal Finance” magazine’s list of top 100 best values in public colleges for 2014. The leading financial magazine has once again put UW-L on its list of top 100 colleges and universities nationally that deliver academic quality and affordability. UW-L has received “best value” recognition from Kiplinger’s for more than a decade. For 2014, UW-L ranked No. 49 for out-of state students and No. 57 for in-state students on Kiplinger’s list, up from No. 73 and No. 65 respectively a year ago. UW-Madison, the only other UW in the rankings, was No. 8 for in-state and No. 10 for out of state. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is No. 1. “We’re very proud to remain ranked among these prestigious institutions,” says UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow. “Clearly we offer a great value for our students by providing them an outstanding education at a very reasonable price.” From large flagship universities to small liberal arts colleges, Kiplinger’s ranks the top 100 four-year schools according to specific criteria for quality and affordability such as student-faculty ratios, admission rates, four-year graduation rates, student debt, sticker price and financial aid. “The college landscape today is very different—tuition increases and student debt dominate the national conversation surrounding higher education,” said Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger’s. “This year’s top 100 schools have made admirable strides to maintain academic integrity and standards while meeting the financial needs of their students.” The annual public school rankings appear in Kiplinger’s February 2014 issue — on news stands Dec. 31, 2013, and online now at www.kiplinger.com/links/college. UW-L also remains the top-ranked comprehensive university in the UW System for the 13th year in a row, according to U.S.News & World Report’s 2014 America’s Best Colleges list of Best Regional Universities in the Midwest. UW-L is the No. 3 public university in the Midwest in the category that includes institutions providing a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs.
