The UW-La Crosse Jazz Ensemble I, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble II will give a fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Valhalla, UW-L Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.
The UW-La Crosse Jazz Ensemble I, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble II will give a fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Valhalla, UW-L Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The program will include a variety of jazz styles ranging from swing to contemporary Big Band music and vocal jazz. Admission is free.
UW-L Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Greg Balfany, will perform several genres of big band jazz. The band will feature keyboardists Dan Collins and Luke Thering, both from Waunakee High School, on Fred Sturm’s contemporary composition, “Highland Aire.” Trumpeter Jimmy Jewson and tenor saxophonist Cody Norling will perform in Charlie Argensinger’s “Yo Mambo.” Holmen drummer Bryan Zanotti will be featured in Count Basie’s “Wind Machine.”
Jazz Ensemble II will perform "Jumpin' At The Westside," an uptempo swinger that will feature James Maxwell, tenor sax; Logan Beyer, trumpet, and Logan Galezio, trombone. "Blues Walk,” a traditional swing tune by Clifford Brown, will be performed in a new Latin arrangement featuring drummer Sam Shilts and Lucas Henderson on congas. The trombone section and soloist Connor Riesdorf will be featured in the ballad, "Remembrance." Jazz Ensemble II is directed by Karyn Quinn.
The Vocal Jazz Ensemble opens with “Tuxedo Junction” featuring sophomore vocalist Cori Vought. “Still” by Brian Eichenberger features Prairie du Chien singer Colin Stemke. A highlight of their performance is an original composition by Vocal Jazz director Gary Walth titled “I Think I’m in Love.”
