UW-L's sustainability-themed year continues with films and presentations

UW-La Crosse’s sustainability-themed year continues this semester with the sharing of stories from local and worldwide environmental advocates. Legendary Polar Explorer Will Steger, who led the first confirmed dogsled journey to the North Pole — without resupply — in 1986, will present on Arctic preservation. Guy Wolf, a UW-L staff member who led a local battle for clean air, will be featured in the premiere-local screening of the film “Crossing the Line: Defending Wisconsin's Environmental Commons.”

image from green fireThursday, Feb. 9 - Screening of the film "Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time" will be at 6:30 p.m. in 1309 Centennial Hall. This documentary about legendary environmentalist Aldo Leopold, highlights his extraordinary career, tracing how he influenced the modern environmental movement. A reception will start at 5:45 p.m. in 1300 Centennial Hall. Stanley A. Temple, senior fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation, will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward. Tuesday, Feb. 21 - Legendary Polar Explorer Will Steger, who led the first confirmed dogsled journey to the North Pole — without resupply — in 1986, will present on Arctic preservation at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Valhalla, Cartwright Center, Gunning-Addition. Steger continues his commitment to education and exploration through the  Will Steger Foundation. He aims to empower people around the world to take action on global warming solutions. A question and answer session follows the presentation. A reception and book signing is from 6-7 p.m. in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. UW-L's Organization of Campus Women Book Club will discuss his book "Crossing Antarctica" at noon Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Mc Caffrey's Coffee, 1808 State St. Thursday, March 1: Screening of film “Flow: How does a handful of corporations steal our water?” will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at 1300 Centennial Hall. A discussion will follow, led by Donna Anderson, Economics, and Colin Belby, Earth Science. Thursday, March 22: A film featuring UW-L staff member Guy Wolf and his fight for clean air in the La Crosse Area will have its premiere screening locally at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in 1309 Centennial Hall. The film “Crossing the Line: Defending Wisconsin's Environmental Commons” celebrates the stories of five individuals, families and communities who, with the help of Midwest Environmental Advocates, stood up for their rights to clean air, land and water and won. Kimberlee Wright, executive director of Midwest Environmental Activists, will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward. A reception begins at 5:45 p.m. at 1300 Centennial Hall.
