The UW-La Crosse Department of Theatre presents the encore performance of “Chicago” to raise funds for UWL theatre student scholarships.
“Chicago” will razzle and dazzle audiences with its smooth music and electric dance numbers as it weaves the tale of murder, greed, fame and all that jazz.
Winner of six Tony Awards, “Chicago” will show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, in the Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts, on the corner of 16th and Vine streets.
By the musical duo John Kander and Fred Ebb, “Chicago” follows the story of two rival murderesses, nightclub star Velma Kelly and hopeful housewife, Roxie Hart. Roxie is an ordinary woman dreaming of the glitz and glamor of 1920’s Chicago nightlife who gets thrust into the spotlight after she murders her lover and is sent to murderer’s row in the Cook County jail, run by the corrupt Mama Morten. Desperate to avoid conviction, Roxie dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate Velma Kelly, by hiring the slick and savvy attorney, Billy Flynn, to manipulate her crime into an extravagant story and sensational headlines. With a cast of fierce characters with vivid and colorful personalities, "Chicago" is sure to sizzle from beginning to end.
