“The Secret in the Wings” resurrects little-known gruesome fairytales
The UWL Department of Theatre and Dance will perform the chilling fairytales in Mary Zimmerman’s “The Secret in the Wings.”
Full of ghoulish developments and horrifying twists, “Secret in the Wings” runs at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24-25 and March 2-4 and Sunday matinees at 2 o’clock Feb. 26 and March 5. All performances are in the Toland Theatre, Lowe Center for the Arts, 333 N. 16th St.
“The Secret in the Wings” adapts a group of lesser-known fairy tales to create a theatrical work that sets their dark mystery against Zimmerman’s signature wit and humor. The play opens as a married couple leave their young daughter, Audrey, with the babysitter for the evening as they head out to a party. The couple sees a genial, avuncular babysitter, but Audrey sees a hideous ogre with a spiny tail who has obvious plans to devour her. Full of dark creatures and jagged human motivations, “The Secret in the Wings” contains so many unsettling ideas and events, that it will stay unnervingly in your memory long after leaving the theater.
