A UW-La Crosse camp seeks to keep kids moving — even when August heat threatens to slow everyone down. Kids will play sports and games while learning about sportsmanship, nutrition, teamwork, fitness and more during the UW-L Summer Youth Sports and Fitness Camp from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 1-3, in the Mitchell Hall Fieldhouse at UW-L. “One of the goals of the camp is to get kids active,” says Brian Udermann, professor of exercise and sports science and camp co-coordinator. “We want to show kids physical activity doesn’t have to be burdensome exercise; it can be fun. Research shows if kids are active when they’re younger they are more likely to stay active as teens and adults.” The camp, for children 5 to 12 years old, costs $25 per day. Campers may sign up for one day or multiple days. Campers must provide their own snacks and lunch. The camp includes activities such as basketball, football, volleyball, kickball, soccer, whiffleball, pickleball, ultimate frisbee, parachute activities and more. Featured speakers will help break up the exercise. In past years kids have heard about fire safety, bike safety, dental hygiene and more from local professionals. The camp staff of about 20 are UW-L physical education majors. More information and online registration is available at www.uwlcamps.com. Campers should register ahead of time. On-site registration will be available only if space allows.
