ACTIVE THREAT INFORMATION

Introduction

An active shooter—defined as an individual or individuals intent on causing mass harm by any means—presents a terrifying and chaotic situation that can lead to widespread panic and confusion. Being prepared and understanding how to respond can significantly increase your chances of survival and help reduce the devastating impact of such an incident.

As part of our ongoing community outreach and active threat preparedness initiatives, the UW-La Crosse Police Department is committed to ensuring that the University community is equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to respond effectively during an active shooter event.

These three words---RUN, HIDE, FIGHT---may save your life or the lives of others.

Run. Hide. Fight.Calling 9-1-1

  • Call ONLY if safe and with information about the active shooter
  • Clarify you are on the UW-La Crosse campus and where you are
  • Give the location of the active shooter(s)
  • Provide physical description of active shooter(s)
  • Describe type of weapons held by the active shooter(s)
  • Notify the dispatcher of victims and their location

How to React When Law Enforcement Arrives

  • Remain calm; follow officers’ instructions
  • Keep your hands up and out in front of you, assuring your hands are empty
  • Keep hands visible at all times
  • Avoid making quick movements towards officers such as attempting to hold on to them for safety
  • Avoid pointing, screaming and/or yelling
  • Move quickly towards the nearest exit or where directed to by police
  • Do not stop to ask officers for help or directions when evacuating

Once In A Safe Place

Emergency responders need to account for everyone!  Once you are in a safe place, DO NOT LEAVE.  As the event unfolds and is better understood, law enforcement will provide additional instructions as to where you should be or when you will be able to leave.  Please be patient with us.  Your safety is our most important concern!

Conclusion

In an active threat situation, your preparedness can make all the difference. Understanding and applying the principles of Run. Hide. Fight. empowers you to make swift, informed decisions that can save lives—including your own. Equally important is the ability to provide immediate aid. The skills taught in Stop the Bleed can help stabilize victims and prevent further loss of life until professional medical help arrives.

By staying alert, having a plan, and taking action, we can all contribute to a safer, more resilient campus community. Preparation is not about instilling fear—it's about building confidence, capability, and a culture of readiness.
