What to Do During a Chemical Spill

Various teaching, research, and service activities at UW-La Crosse involve the use of chemicals and hazardous materials that can pose risks when spilled. Knowing how to respond appropriately is critical to protecting yourself and others.

Immediate Emergency Actions

If the Spill Poses an Immediate Threat to Life, Health, or Fire Safety:

  • Evacuate the immediate area and close the door behind you.
  • Activate the nearest fire alarm to initiate building evacuation.
  • Call 911 and report:
    • The type and amount of chemical spilled
    • The exact location (building, room number, etc.)
    • Your name and location
    • Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you to hang up.

UW-La Crosse Police and Environmental Health & Safety personnel will respond.

  • Once outside, gather at a safe distance and follow instructions from emergency responders.

If the Spill is Small and Not an Immediate Hazard:

  • Contain the spill to prevent it from spreading—do not allow it to reach drains, pipes, or walls.
  • Evacuate the immediate area and notify occupants in nearby rooms.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) if working near the spill.
  • Call 911 and provide:
    • Type and amount of chemical spilled
    • Exact location (building, room number)
    • Your name and location
    • Remain on the call until the dispatcher ends the conversation.
  • If there are injuries, provide first aid and inform 911 of any injured individuals.
  • Do not attempt cleanup unless you are properly trained and equipped.

If the Spill Occurs Outdoors:

  • Take action to prevent the chemical from spreading.
  • Warn others nearby and restrict access to the affected area.
  • Call 911 and provide all relevant information to emergency responders.
