Campus electrical upgrade

The contractor doing electrical work on campus is changing the schedule to close a portion of East Avenue, north of Cartwright Center, Monday, Aug. 10, to begin work on the upgrade. East Avenue will be reduced to one lane until Monday, Aug. 17. Pedestrian traffic will be routed to the sidewalk west of Mitchell Hall. A map is attached showing the location of the work. Summer Lantern distributed

Issue celebrates career achievements of UWL alumnae The latest issue of the UW-La Crosse Lantern was published and sent to more than 65,000 alumni and friends in July. Stormwater group expanding its work

The La Crosse Urban Stormwater Group is partnering with La Crosse Area Habitat for Humanity to develop a stormwater management learning site. The Habitat ReStore, 3181 Berlin Drive, La Crosse, will be the "poster child" for stormwater management, showing how urban properties can be managed to soak up rainfall and snowmelt instead of sending polluted water to local rivers. When the project is complete, home and business owners can visit the ReStore to see firsthand what best practices look like, how they are planned and accomplished, and how they benefit people, stream health and water quality. Beautiful gardens, local food, urban biological diversity, great places at home and work, lower costs, and authentic brand growth and marketing can also be benefits. Project leaders and Viterbo University students will develop 10 high-quality, weatherproof teaching signs to describe the issue, the area, practices used to manage stormwater, and how they can be accomplished. If funding is obtained, artist Karl Unnasch and Western Technical College students will also build a sculpture of reused materials for the site during the cold months, all to be installed spring 2016. UWL is also becoming involved, says outreach leader Amy Smith. "We are working on collaborating with UWL for this particular project," says Smith. She expects graphic design students to become involved with creation of outdoor signs, as well as getting other student groups involved. The UWL Habitat for Humanity group will also work with the project. "The campus is a great example of proper stormwater management with its many retention ponds and bio filters," she notes. Completion will be celebrated during Earth Week 2016 in April. Diverse management practices and interpretive signs will make this a permanent learning site, maintained by Habitat For Humanity.

UWL students who put practice to work for non-profits featured on UW website

The story is highlighted on the For Wisconsin homepage. For Wisconsin has been developed by UW System, with help from all campuses, to show how Wisconsin’s public universities, colleges and extension networks are working to improve the state’s competitive edge by leveraging the state’s human capital, supporting business and industry, and strengthening local communities.
