Team-building exercises, competitions and pure fun were all part of an annual “Welcome Back” ropes course leadership lab for the UW-La Crosse Army ROTC Eagle Battalion Saturday, Sept. 12, at the UWL Adventure Ropes Course, located near UWL’s physical plant. Second Lt. Cody Colson, ’15, called it a successful day. Colson was commissioned through UWL’s Military Science Department (ROTC) and is now serving in the Wisconsin National Guard. “The ropes course is an important event because it gives our freshmen and other students who are new to ROTC the opportunity to interact and get to know the sophomore, junior and senior cadets,” he explained. “The barbecue and bubble soccer afterward also showed the passing students, and especially those who stopped by to chat and participate, that ROTC is fun, exciting and a great organization.” [caption id="attachment_43690" align="alignright" width="350"]Image of a student hanging on a ropes course. The adventure events included a low ropes course, involving perceived risks and challenges, incorporating wooden platforms, boards, ropes and cables that enhanced coordination and balance. The high ropes course challenged cadets to overcome the idea that they couldn’t succeed. Following the adventure course, Eagle Battalion cadets marched back to Eagle Field with the unit colors leading the way. Singing a cadence, the cadets showed pride as passers-by honked their horns and gave thumbs-up out of open windows. Once back at Eagle Field, the cadets enjoyed a barbecue provided by the staff of the Military Science Department and bubble soccer games provided by the Wisconsin National Guard. UWL students also joined in the fun. Eagle Battalion is comprised of leaders and students from four area universities including: UWL, Viterbo University, Winona State University and Saint Mary’s University. The Military Science Department is an elective program that teaches leadership and prepares participants to be officers in the Army, Army Reserves, and Army National Guard. ROTC offers many opportunities and paths that significantly defray the cost of college through scholarships, stipends and numerous other incentives. Examples are payment of full tuition and fees, a $1,200 book stipend and a $300-$500 (tax-free) monthly stipend.
