Alumna headlines annual Festival of Languages

UWL immersed itself into other cultures on Wednesday. The annual Festival of Languages had students, faculty and staff speaking Hmong, using Chinese calligraphy and hearing the value of learning languages from an alumna. “This event helped me decide what I want to study and do with my life,” says UWL Junior Rose Franke, who on top of her major is working toward an Latin American studies minor.   The event featured 1990 graduate Lynn Sessler Neitzel as the keynote speaker. She is curriculum and assessment coordinator at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville and a Japanese Instructor for the Wisconsin Virtual School. On Tuesday, she met with a group at North Woods Elementary School in La Crosse. “I think language is critical,” she says. “I’d like to see it be required instead of an extra or encore class.” Neitzel’s message to everyone was to just do it and step outside of your comfort zone. “Study what you’re passionate about and want to connect with,” she says. “Don’t study what someone tells you is important.”
