‘Riverside Jazz Party’ to close out park series July 26

The Gertrude Salzer-Gordon Jazz in the Park 2015 Concert Series concludes with concert featuring diva Deborah Brown, Dalton Boys Trio, and the Greater La Crosse High School Jazz Ensemble.

The Gertrude Salzer-Gordon Jazz in the Park 2015 Concert Series concludes another successful season by the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra with the annual “Riverside Jazz Party” at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 26, in La Crosse’s Riverside Park. Brown, who has 11 albums to her credit, has appeared in concert in more than 50 countries.[/caption] Kansas City internationally acclaimed jazz diva Deborah Brown brings her personal interpretations to many great tunes including “I’ve Got My Love,” “Always,” “A Little Tear” and more. Brown's musical talents have propelled her from coast to coast, eventually leading her to Japan, Indonesia and China culminating in a 12-year residency in Europe. Performing in nightclubs, concerts, jazz festivals, on TV and radio soundstages, Brown has made a name with appearances in more than 50 countries. She has recorded 11 albums as a leader and has been featured on numerous others as guest soloist. Brown has participated in and created many unique musical situations, including duet recordings with trombonist Slide Hampton and Clark Terry, a concert tour with piano master Roger Kellaway, as well as performances with Bobby Shew, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Eric Reed Roy Hargrove and others. In addition to the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra and Brown, the party will feature the Greater La Crosse High School Jazz Ensemble and the Dalton Boys Trio. The La Crosse Region High School Jazz Band, directed by percussionist and educator James Knutson, comprises outstanding musicians from regional high schools. The group was a mainstay of the former La Crosse Jazz Festival and is making its premier appearance with the Riverside Jazz Party. The Dalton Band features two brothers and a son. Bert and Larry Dalton have performed numerous times at La Crosse Jazz Festivals as the Dalton Brothers Trio, but this performance marks the addition of Larry’s son, Patrick, on drums. Bert Dalton is a jazz pianist who has performed with Herbie Mann, Regina Carter, Bud Shank, Anita O’Day, Victor Mendoza, Howard Alden, among others, and has recorded with John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton. He is the music director of National Dance Institute of New Mexico and was recently honored with the 2013 Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for Excellence In the Arts. Bassist Larry Dalton is known locally for performances with regional jazz artists and as a member of String Ties, Under Paris Skies and Grand Picnic. He performs locally and recently retired as the director of finance for the Onalaska Public Schools. Patrick Dalton is a Minneapolis-based percussionist and a 2003 graduate of Onalaska High School who performs regularly with four Twin Cities bands. Performer times for the party include: 5 p.m. — La Crosse Youth Jazz Band 6 p.m. — Dalton Trio    7:15–9 p.m. — La Crosse Jazz Orchestra with Deborah Brown Admission is free. The rain site is the Weber Theater.
