2015 Outstanding Graduates

Six will be honored the evening before Commencement as the university’s top graduates for 2014-15. The UW-L Distinguished Alumni Awards Reception & Ceremony is set for Friday, May 8, at the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center.

Six will be honored before Commencement as the university’s top graduates for 2014-15.  The UW-L Distinguished Alumni Awards Reception & Ceremony is set for Friday, May 8, at the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. The students are being honored with five alumni recognized for distinguished service and successful careers. Student awards and this year’s honorees include:

The Strzelczyk Award in Science and Health

The Strzelczyk Award in Science and Health recognizes an outstanding senior in the College of Science and Health for academic achievement and service to the campus and community. Robert, ’54, and Judy Strzelczyk endowed the award in 1996. Also, they have provided funding for physical therapy research projects, research equipment, student loans, and four, full-time tuition scholarships. Recipients receive $1,000. [caption id="attachment_40759" align="alignright" width="150"]glasgow.evan Evan Glasgow[/caption] Evan Glasgow is graduating with a bachelor’s in biochemistry and biology, with a biomedical science concentration, and a minor in mathematics. Glasgow was a general chemistry tutor and volunteered as a small group Bible study leader for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He participated in undergraduate research investigating protein structure and function, and spent a summer at Mayo Clinic training in x-ray crystallography. Glasgow plans to attend UW-Madison’s Integrated Program in Biochemistry to earn a doctorate. He hopes to use his passion for teaching and mentoring by becoming a professor. His top scientific interest is researching new biochemical strategies for fighting antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. He is the son of David and Marla Glasgow, Brodhead, Wisconsin.

The Murphy Awards for Academic Excellence

The Murphy Awards for Academic Excellence recognize the university’s top two graduating scholars, as chosen by the Scholarship and Awards Committee. A grant from the Murphy Foundation created the awards in 1980. Marjorie P. Murphy, foundation president, cited a desire to recognize outstanding and exceptional scholastic ability. Recipients receive $1,500 and $1,000, respectively. [caption id="attachment_40760" align="alignright" width="150"]kramolis.kali Kali Kramolis[/caption] Kali Kramolis graduated in December 2014 with degrees in biology, with a biomedical concentration, and Spanish. Kramolis ran high hurdles for the Eagles for two years, was very involved in Pre-Medicine Club and Golden Key International Honour Society, serving as vice president for both, and was a lab teaching assistant who helped coordinate the Anatomy Memorial Ceremony. She volunteered in Gundersen’s Hem/Onc Infusion Center, with hospice patients and at the Children’s Museum; coached Special Olympics; coordinated a weekly bingo program at a local nursing home; directed the Salvation Army’s Coats for Kids/Angel Tree Program; and organized two blood drives. Kramolis also volunteered in Kenya, Costa Rica and Nicaragua and studied in Seville, Spain, for a semester. In 2013 she presented at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research. Since graduation, Kramolis has worked at ABLE Inc., providing care for individuals with developmental disabilities, and at BrightStar Care as a certified nursing assistant. In August she plans to attend the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health to earn a MD/MPH dual degree. She hopes to serve individuals with developmental disabilities and focus on impoverished populations as a physician. She is the daughter of Tom and Leslie Kramolis, River Falls, Wisconsin. [caption id="attachment_40761" align="alignright" width="150"]gloe.jaco Jacob Gloe[/caption] Jacob Gloe is graduating with a bachelor’s in computational physics and applied mathematics. Gloe was secretary for the Mathematics and Statistics Club, a mathematics tutor in the Murphy Learning Center, and a private mathematics tutor. He was also involved in musical productions of “Spring Awakening” and “The Drowsy Chaperone,” and has competed in UW rock climbing competitions. Gloe has participated in several research and extra-curricular activities, including computational astrophysics research, mathematical ecology and numerical analysis research, the COMAP and Putnam competitions, and Math Department colloquium talks. Gloe plans to attend graduate school at UW-Madison to pursue a doctorate in mathematics. He hopes to become a professor in mathematics teaching undergraduate students and perform research. He is the son of Christopher and Karna Gloe, Rochester, Minnesota.

The Jake and Janet Hoeschler Award for Excellence

The Jake and Janet Hoeschler Award for Excellence recognizes a College of Business Administration graduate for academic accomplishment and qualities of leadership demonstrated in campus and community activities. Janet Hoeschler, a 1940 graduate, established the award in 1992 to signify a partnership of business and the university. The award extends the Hoeschlers’ belief in excellence, education, philanthropy and the La Crosse community. Recipients receive $1,500. [caption id="attachment_40762" align="alignright" width="150"]wallace.sama Sam Wallace[/caption] Sam Wallace is graduating with a bachelor’s in marketing with a minor in Spanish. She was president of the Student Advisory Council for the College of Business Administration, a member of AMA, a women’s club soccer player, and on many intramurals teams. Wallace held two marketing internships. She was the only student to serve on the CBA’s dean search committee. Wallace plans to travel before returning to Milwaukee to work in social media at an advertising agency. She is the daughter of Mark and Julia Wallace, Germantown, Wisconsin.

The John E. Magerus Award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior from the College of Liberal Studies

The John E. Magerus Award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior from the College of Liberal Studies recognizes an outstanding graduate for academic accomplishments, leadership, and involvement in the campus and community. The award is named for Magerus, who retired in 2004 after 28 years of teaching and serving as an administrator for the college. Recipients receive $1,000. Katherine Svitavsky[/caption] Katherine Svitavsky is graduating with degrees in political science and public administration with a professional writing minor. She was involved in Residence Hall Association Council and was a resident assistant for three years. Svitavsky represented students on the La Crosse City Council, a position to which she was appointed in May 2012 and elected to the following spring. Svitavsky completed an undergraduate research project investigating the rhetoric nonprofit organizations use to describe their clientele. She was selected as one of the student commencement speakers. Svitavsky would like to continue public service and hopes to pursue a graduate degree. She is the daughter of Mary Blamer Svitavsky and John Stuyvenberg, Menasha, Wisconsin; and James and Vicky Svitavsky, Waupun, Wisconsin.

The Rosandich Graduate Thesis Award

The Rosandich Graduate Thesis Award recognizes the best graduate thesis, based on originality, impact and written quality. The award is funded through generosity of Thomas P. Rosandich, ’54, president of the U.S. Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala. The recipient receives $1,000. [caption id="attachment_40764" align="alignright" width="150"]greve,jose Josephine Greve[/caption] Josephine Greve earned a bachelor’s in microbiology from Minnesota State University Mankato in 2010. She became a Quality Assurance Supervisor for a food manufacturing company in Rochester, Minnesota, where she enhanced her food microbiology and food safety passion. In 2014, Greve earned a master’s in microbiology from UW-L, completing research with Kwik Trip Inc.’s Food Safety Laboratory.  She was on the Dean’s List each semester and received a Research, Service, Education and Leadership grant in 2012. Greve has been involved with publications, grants and professional presentations, including a poster presentation at the International Association for Food Protection’s annual conference. She hopes to pursue a doctorate and continue food safety research and development. She is the daughter of Denny Greve and LuAnn Ernzen, Bankston, Iowa.
