Katherine Evans, Recreation Management & Therapeutic Recreation, presented "Exploring the Role of Leisure in the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls " at The Academy of Leisure Sciences Annual Conference (Theme: Critical Realities - Culture at the Crossroads) on Thursday, March 3 online. Based in notions of resistance inherent within leisure research (e.g., Shaw, 1991; Wearing, 2008), and the essence of what leisure “should be” (i.e., grounded in freedom, autonomy, and self-expression, inherently positive and socially good), this 1-hour presentation focused on two important aspects of this discussion: 1. The role the leisure field can play in the efforts of eliminating violence against women and girls across the social ecology; and 2. An overview of the role leisure researchers can play in helping move leisure theory and programming forward in this effort.
