Research and publishing
Research in our lab focuses on synthetic organic chemistry. Organic reactions are crucial in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and consumer products; unfortunately, many of these reactions utilize expensive or hazardous chemical reagents. We seek to develop safe and cost-effective reactions to synthesize heterocycles and natural products. Current projects focus on one-pot, two-step cyclodehydration reactions and investigating methods for the synthesis of natural product derivatives. Students learn organic lab techniques, instrumentation use, and how the fundamentals of chemistry underpin organic chemical research.
