Stephen Morscheck, University of North Texas; and Kourtney Austin and Stephen Austin, both Music; presented "Staging a Coup: History Meets Science" at The National Association of Teachers of Singing National Conference on July 1 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Kourtney and Stephen Austin presented a historical overview of the phonatory onset, as well as a recap of K. Austin's recent studies on the acoustic ramifications of how a person begins a singing tone. Morscheck provided his personal testimony of onset training based on his many years as a professional bass-baritone. The National NATS Conference is a biennial conference celebrating the art of singing and increasing knowledge of teachers to help them better assist their students.
