Brief biography
Zach Stensen creates works on paper that employ a pictographic vocabulary to explore how images and icons function as place markers for lived experience. He earned an MFA and MA from the University of Iowa, focusing on printmaking and book arts. Zach has been awarded artist residencies at the Frans Masereel Centrum (Belgium), Proyecto’ace (Argentina), and the Doha Fire Station (Qatar), amongst others. He has shown in over 50 national and international exhibitions and is in over 20 permanent collections. Currently, Zach is an assistant professor in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Art Department, teaching drawing and print media classes.
Before joining UW-La Crosse, Zach was an assistant professor in the VCUarts Qatar Painting + Printmaking program (2011-2020). He helped establish the first fine arts major in Qatar's history during this tenure. In addition, he also served as Master Printer for the university’s print publishing program, Fanoon: Center for Printmedia Research, organizing and producing over 25 visiting artist projects with renowned artists such as Shahzia Sikander, Ranjani Shettar, and Trenton Doyle Hancock.
