Forms

Auditing is defined as sitting in on a lecture course and not actively participating. Auditors are not required to recite, perform, or take examinations, although regular attendance is expected. Any student may audit a class with permission.

Individuals must be registered in the class to audit.

Grading

Audited courses are listed on a student's official UW-La Crosse transcript with a grade of "AS" (audit satisfactory), "AU" (audit unsatisfactory), or "NR" (no report). Prior to enrolling, students desiring to audit discuss with the instructor the standard for earning an "AS" in the particular course. No credit is earned for audited courses. Audited courses may be repeated for credit in another term.

Switching from credit to audit

If you are already registered in the class for a regular grade to earn credit, you may switch to being graded as an audit up through the last day to drop with a "W" date. Permission from the instructor and the department chair is required to switch to audit.

Students may only switch from an audit grade to earning credit during the first week of the semester. Permission from the instructor and the department chair to switch from an audit to credit required.

How to apply

If you took a course (either an audit or graded course) in the previous semester or are a current student, you do not need to apply, but you must still  get permission from the instructor(s) and register through Records and Registration.

To apply:

  • Find the course offering you are interested in (using the "explore our course offerings" link to the Timetable above) and get that instructor's permission to audit the class. The instructor should fill out an override form or email their permission.
  • Then, you will need to apply to UW-La Crosse through the UW System Online Application as a someone only taking a few courses. You are considered a non-degree applicant if you are only taking audited classes.
    • Please see the Admissions page for more information on applying as a Special/Non-Degree Student.

How to register

  • Return the completed override form, or have the instructor email their permission, to Records and Registration, 117 Graff Main Hall, records@uwlax.edu
  • Records and Registration will register you for the class.

Cost

Please refer to the information under "What if I want to audit a course?" Undergraduate FAQ on the Cost to Attend website. The cost is based on whether or not you are also taking regular graded classes for credit.
