If you are a Wisconsin resident and 60 years or older (by the first day of class), you may qualify to audit classes free of charge* on a space-available basis by permission of the instructor.

* the senior auditor is responsible for paying any special course/material fees

Auditing is defined as sitting in on a lecture course and not actively participating. Auditors are not required to recite, perform, or take examinations, although regular attendance is expected.

Audited courses are listed on a student's official UW-La Crosse transcript with a grade of "AS" (audit satisfactory), "AU" (audit unsatisfactory), or "NR" (no report). Prior to enrolling, senior guest auditors discuss with the instructor the standard for earning an "AS" in the particular course. No credit is earned for audited courses. Audited courses may be repeated for credit in another term.

Individuals must be registered in the class to audit.

How to apply & register

  • Find the course offering you are interested in (using the "explore our course offerings" link to the Timetable above). Then contact the instructor to request permission to audit the class.
  • Then, you will need to apply to UW-La Crosse through the UW System Online Application as a someone only taking a few courses. When choosing program, select “Senior Citizen Audit.”
    • If you audited a course in the previous semester, you do not need to apply.
    • Please see the Admissions page for more information on applying as a Special/Non-Degree Student.
  • The instructor should complete an override form or send an email to records@uwlax.edu.
  • The completed override form should be returned to Records and Registration, 117 Graff Main Hall, to be registered into the class.
