School of Education
Student iPad program
The School of Education (SOE) is committed to staying abreast with current technology trends in our area K-12 schools, and strives to prepare teacher candidates who are able to facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity through creation of digital age learning experiences. To this end, we promote creativity, collaboration, responsibility, and innovation in the use of technology by students, faculty, and the local educational community. Our K-12 partners follow a 1:1 device model, and many have invested in or are planning to invest in iPads as that device.
As a result, all UWL teacher candidates who are admitted to the School of Education are required to have an iPad that meets SOE specifications (see also below) for use in their pre-professional courses and clinical experiences, and strategies for utilizing this technology in future K-12 classrooms are incorporated across the curriculum.
By working directly with the vendor, we work to provide teacher candidates with the most current version that meets curricular needs at the best possible price. The fee for an iPad purchased through the SOE iPad program is financial aid eligible and will appear on the student bill in the semester following admission to the candidate's teacher education program. Students may also seek approval to purchase an iPad that meets specifications outside of the SOE process (see below for details), or may be eligible for a donated iPad through the iPad Give Back Program. If the acquisition of an iPad is a financial hardship, please contact us to discuss options.
iPads and Admission to SOE:
Teacher candidates who are admitted to the School of Education are required to have an iPad that meets SOE specifications. As part of the admissions process, students are provided information on how to purchase the appropriate iPad through the SOE iPad order survey.
Please note that by accepting admission to a UWL teacher education program, teacher candidates are agreeing to obtain an iPad that meets specifications. Options include:
- Purchase an iPad through SOE: Students admitted to SOE should complete the survey to select their iPad and optional accessories no later than two weeks from the date of their admission letter. By completing the survey, candidates understand that the program fee for the cost of the iPad and any optional accessories will be assessed on their student bill for the following semester.
- Seek approval to purchase an iPad outside of the SOE process: Students wishing to purchase an iPad on their own must contact SOE (soe@uwlax.edu) within two weeks of the date on their admission letter to obtain information on specifications and receive approval.
- Apply for a donated iPad through the SOE iPad Give Back Program: Interested students should indicate they wish to be considered for a donated iPad in their application for admission to SOE. More information about this program will be forthcoming.
Additional Information:
- Obtaining an approved iPad is a condition of admission to SOE. If a student has not completed the iPad ordering survey or requested approval for a purchase outside of SOE by the due date (in your admission letter), a registration hold will be placed on their account until the situation has been resolved.
- Teacher candidates who decide to change their major, change their program, and/or decline admission to the School of Education after ordering their iPad through the SOE survey are required to notify the School of Education (soe@uwlax.edu) prior to the first Monday in August (if admitted in spring) or the first Monday in January (if admitted in fall). The charge for the iPad is non-refundable after that date.
- The iPad is the candidate's own personal property. Candidates are responsible for the costs associated with loss or damage of their device.
Teacher candidates admitted to their program who have completed the iPad survey by the survey due date will be able to pick up their iPad upon receiving an email with pick up instructions. NOTE: you must bring your UWL student ID with you when picking up the iPad.
