Sustainable Features
LED lighting: The Student Union uses all LED lighting which helps cause major improvements in energy efficacy.
Building Construction: Materials used to construct this building were regionally source as well as 90+% of the construction waste was recycled.
Building Material Specifications: Building materials used during construction of The Student Union were selected to be less toxic and contain low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). Use of building materials with low toxicity and VOC’s improves indoor and outdoor air quality.
Cool Systems: In the Student Union, there are compressors in the basement which help keep the refrigeration units cool. These compressors produce a lot of heat as a by-product. Typically, that extra heat is vented out of the building and into the atmosphere. At UWL, however, that excess heat is recycled and used to help heat water for the building. It doesn't replace water heaters completely, but in combination with energy efficient water heaters located nearby, it does reduce the burden.
Water Efficiency: The Student Union includes low flow toilets, urinals, and faucets to reduce water consumption.
Interior Aeroponic Vegetable and Herb Garden Growing Rack System: These systems are stationed around the student union free for students to consume from. These growing rack systems were brought to campus by the green fund in 2017.
