Chancellor James Beeby

James Beeby, PhD will be the 11th Chancellor of UWL starting July 1, 2024.

Beeby currently serves as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Keene State College in New Hampshire where he led a collaborative strategic planning and implementation process; developed several new undergraduate and graduate programs; partnered with student engagement, faculty, and staff to improve retention and graduation rates; built transfer pathways with community colleges; established strong ties with local businesses; and overseen successful reaccreditation efforts. He has also collaborated with system institutions on projects promoting student success, student mental health, and program development, and the implementation of new software systems. 

Prior to Keene State, Beeby served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Southern Indiana. He also spent time as a professor and chair in the Department of History at Middle Tennessee State University. Beeby has published extensively in the fields of U.S. southern history, African American history, race relations, and the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, including scholarly articles and book chapters. He is the author of two university press peer-reviewed books. Hailing from a small village in eastern England, Beeby is a first-generation college student. He holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in history from the University of Wales (United Kingdom) and both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in American culture studies from Bowling Green State University (Ohio).
