The undergraduate Sport Management program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL) prepares students for a variety of sport-related careers within professional sports, intercollegiate athletics, community sports, corporate sports organizations, non-for-profit organizations and the fitness industry. Students must have a minimum 2.5 UWL cumulative GPA to declare the Exercise and Sport Science-Sport Management Major, and a 2.75 or better UWL cumulative GPA is required to apply to the program.

The program follows guidelines created by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA), which was established by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM).

Our students are learning both the theoretical foundations of Sport Management and the applied nature of the sport industry. The curriculum includes classes from a variety of disciplines, such as Anatomy, Physiology, Sport Management and Society, Sport Promotion, Sport Law, Sport Operations Management/Event and Venue Management, Financial Aspects of Sport, Sport Facilities, Administration in Fitness and Sport, Media and Public Relations in Sport Management, Economics of Sport, Accounting Principles, Microeconomics, Principles of Marketing, Behavior and Theory in Organizations, and Professional Communication. Courses in economics, organization behavior, and marketing further enhance the business aspect of this major. Many sport management students also pursue a concentration or minor and tailor their studies according to their professional interests. The required Field Experience class (3 credit hours; complete 6 hours per week for a full semester at an approved site) and full-time internship (12 internship credit hours; require 40 hours per week for 12~14 weeks at a supervised site) provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the industry before they graduate.

As a result, we provide high-quality sport management professionals, not only as interns but also as long-term employees. Students complete their program of study with an internship and are able to select from a wide variety of high profile sports organizations. Also, our alumni enjoy high job placement rates within the field.

General Questions

  1. Why should I apply to get into the program ASAP?

  2. How can I get into the program ASAP?
    • Finish and earn a "C" or higher in pre-admission core courses (BIO 100 or BIO 105 or MIC100; and ESS 110). Also maintain a GPA of 2.75 and higher.
  3. How many times can I apply to get into the program?
    • Each person has two opportunities.
  4. Do I have less opportunity if I am in progress in my courses?
    • No, you will have the same opportunity.
  5. How many students do you accept each semester?
    • We accept about 15-17 students each semester.
  6. How many people apply to get into the program?

  9. What if I did not get accepted on the first time?
    • It is competitive to get into the program. If interested, you may reapply next semester. You may contact the program director or your advisor to see how you can improve your credentials. However, the admission to the Sport Management program is competitive and not all who reapply may be accepted. Several majors listed below, which are commonly seen for the sport management professions, might be other options to consider in pursuing your future career in sport management.
      1. Marketing

  10. What are your criteria to review the application materials?
    • There are several items when we review the application materials. First, the applicants need to meet all the requirements, such as completed application forms and materials. Then performance on your interview, experiences in sport related areas, resume, and job shadow reports complete the criteria we use to review the application materials. Note: Admission is competitive. Meeting requirements does not guarantee admission.
  11. What can I do to increase my chances of getting into the program?
    • In addition to the GPA and required courses, involvement in sport management experiences will be helpful. Also, being well prepared for the interview and application materials such as cover letter, resume, job shadow reports, etc.

Job Shadows

  1. What is the purpose of job shadow?
    • Doing job shadows is a very good opportunity for you to know if you are interested in sport management or not before your application. Also you will have better understanding of the career choices you may have in the future.
  2. What are the two job shadows that we have to complete?
    • You need to find two sport mgt related sites to observe someone for 4-6 hrs for each site. Most of the time we suggest students find some places and positions they might be interested in the future. Some students shadow at YMCA or Athletic Dept. It really depends on your interest, as long as it is related to sport management. So you can start from your hometown fitness center, YMCA, etc. You need to get advisor approval for your job shadow sites before you begin them.
  3. When should I start to set up my job shadows?
    • You can start to set up your job shadows 2-3 months before your application.
