Why study Applied Statistics at UWL?
Statisticians turn numbers into understandable concepts, identifiable trends and patterns, or conclusions. They play a critical role in bringing data into the decision-making process in a wide array of contexts - from medicine to marketing, and from space exploration to the management of earth's resources.
With small classes of 5 to 25 students, Applied Statistics graduate students have the opportunity to get to know faculty well. Numerous faculty in our department have been recognized for excellence in teaching and mentoring.

Employment
As our ability to collect data grows, our need for statisticians to analyze and make sense of that data grows alongside it. 95% of our program graduates report finding employment using their degree.
Recent graduates have found positions as data analysts, biostatisticians, and data scientists at employers including Gundersen Health System, Fastenal Company, United States Department of Defense, Mayo Clinic, Northwest Mutual, Baker Tilly, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
IMPRESSIVE EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK
- Overall employment of statisticians is projected to grow 30 percent from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- As of 2024, the median salary for statisticians is $104,000.
