Annually, Human Resources provides notice of the upcoming winter holidays. Please find below information related to the 2021 Winter holidays:
2021 Legal Holidays | When Observed |
Thanksgiving, Fourth Thursday in November | Thursday, November 25 |
Christmas Eve, December 24 | Friday, December 24 |
Christmas, December 25 | Saturday, December 25 (Floating Holiday) |
New Year's Eve, December 31 | Friday, December 31 |
Offices are permitted to close the Friday after Thanksgiving should the entire department or unit vote unanimously to do so, as the result is that certain employee groups will need to utilize paid leave to remain compensated for the closure.
As the Christmas holiday will produce a floating holiday, employees should work with their supervisors to schedule their floating holidays accordingly. Keep in mind that University Staff may not carry over floating holidays from one calendar year to another therefore you will need to use your floating holiday(s) prior to December 30th to avoid losing the legal holiday. (Alternatively, this date could be applied to November 26, 2021, a day should that department close).
On Saturday, January 1, 2022, the New Year’s Day holiday will also result in a floating holiday for employees as well. This floating holiday must be used by June 30, 2022, for Academic and Limited Staff, and by December 30, 2022, for University Staff.
