A historic visit

Vice President Kamala Harris held a campaign rally at the Recreational Eagle Center on Thursday afternoon.

Harris rally continues UWL tradition of free speech, political discourse

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign rally at the Recreational Eagle Center Thursday afternoon was the latest in a long line of notable political visits to UWL.

Harris’ visit came just days before the kickoff of Free Speech Week (Oct. 21-25) on campus.

These visits underscore UWL’s commitment to fostering civil dialogue and free speech, providing a platform for diverse viewpoints on critical issues, and promoting campus and community engagement in the democratic process.

Fittingly, Harris’ visit came just days before the kickoff of Free Speech Week (Oct. 21-25) on campus, with activities planned throughout the week.

Harris joined the likes of several other presidents, vice presidents and national dignitaries who have address campus through the decades. They include:

  • Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence (Aug. 11, 2016)
  • President Barack Obama (July 2, 2015)
  • Vice President Joe Biden and Second Lady Jill Biden (Oct. 13, 2012)
  • Former President Bill Clinton (Feb. 14, 2008)
  • First Lady Hillary Clinton (Nov. 3, 1996)
  • Senator Al Gore (March 29, 1988)
  • Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter (April 4, 1976)
  • Senator John F. Kennedy (Sept. 25, 1959)
