DiningServicesWEB What’s Happening In Dining Services — By Registered Dietitian Katie Callahan How to reduce sodium intake Why is everyone so concerned about sodium? While it is an essential nutrient, most Americans are most definitely getting way more sodium than the body needs. Convenience foods, baked goods and fast food items contribute to high sodium intake, but what some people do not realize is that it is also in foods you would not suspect. For instance, did you know that cheese, bread and instant cereals are generally high in sodium? Sodium contributes to increased blood pressure because it has the ability hold excess fluid in the body. High blood pressure can lead to other detrimental conditions such as stroke, heart failure, osteoporosis, stomach cancer and kidney disease. The American Heart Association recommends people consume 1,500 milligrams (or about ¾ teaspoon) of sodium a day to help with fluid balance. However, Americans typically consume about 3,400 milligrams — twice the amount of what is recommended. Blood pressure typically rises with age and consuming less sodium can reduce risky health conditions in the future. Sodexo does an excellent job of keeping sodium low in food items. Instead of using salt in food items, herbs and spices are used to make food more flavorful. You can even swap herbs and spices for salt in your own cooking. Some great seasonings include: allspice, chives, cinnamon and rosemary. Here are some more helpful tips: 1.) Consume more whole foods over processed food items. While there is some sodium in whole foods, it is generally not nearly as much as packaged items. 2.) Pay attention to nutrition labels. Select items that are sodium-free (less than 5 milligrams of sodium per serving), very low sodium (35 milligrams or less per serving), or low-sodium (140 milligrams or less per serving). 3.) Eat out less. Restaurant-prepared meals are often high in sodium. If you go out, be specific about what you want and how you want it prepared. Request that your dish be prepared without salt. 4.) Use the pepper shaker instead of the salt shaker to season food items. If you follow these general guidelines, you should be on the road to better health!

Read what your doctor is reading People at UW-L have access to the same professional literature used by researchers, physicians, nurses, medical support staff, and other health care professionals. While public Internet sources can provide excellent information and advice about health issues and medical conditions, much of the professional medical literature used by health care practitioners is available only through fee-based services. Murphy Library's subscriptions to these resources can be found in a variety of places in the library website, but one good starting point is the Health Professions Subject Guide at http://libguides.uwlax.edu/healthprofessions. Examples of resources on the Health Professions Subject Guide are:
  • Medline with Full Text (EBSCOhost) – the primary repository of published scholarly and professional articles in the field of medicine. Murphy Library’s version of this – unlike the free version on the Internet – includes the full text of many articles.
  • ClinicalKey (Elsevier) - a point-of-care resource for healthcare professionals designed to provide clinicians with answers quickly.
  • Nursing Consult (Elsevier) - comprehensive clinical information for nursing professionals/students plus instant access to continuously updated, evidence-based support for patient education, diagnosis, and management.
  • Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews – for healthcare professionals, rigorous and up-to-date analysis of research on the effectiveness of healthcare treatments and interventions.
These and other resources found on the Health Professions Subject Guide can help people gain a more complete understanding of health and medical issues.
