Listen in to discussion on WPR with UWL education director, DPI and school district representatives

Patricia Markos, director of UWL’s Institute for Professional Studies in Education, along with representatives from the Department of Public Instruction, the La Crosse School District and La Crosse Education Association, and the Whitehall School District, will discuss proposed changes to teacher licensing rules in Wisconsin on Wisconsin Public Radio. Their conversation on “Newsmakers” will cover how licensing changes could affect teachers, rural school districts and UWL’s teacher licensing program. Listen in at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 22, on La Crosse's Ideas 90.3 WHLA, with repeat broadcasts Saturdays at 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. on La Crosse's 88.9 WLSU. Or listen in online at www.wpr.org/programs/newsmakers. They will cover concerns related to:
  • A proposed two-tiered system of educator preparation where alternative preparation programs are held to less rigorous standards than institutes for higher education.
  • Removal of specific content licenses in music, science and social studies
  • Licensing teachers who are not well-prepared in content knowledge and/or developmentally appropriate practice.
Interviews on “Newsmakers” explore politics, education, the environment and other regional issues relevant to southwest Wisconsin and adjacent portions of Minnesota and Iowa.
