La Crosse, Wis. – A filmmaker and a scholar of Chicano culture will present as part of the activities planned in observance of National Hispanic Heritage month at UW-La Crosse. Alma Rosa Álvarez, professor of English and writing at Southern Oregon University, will present “Liberation Theology in Chicana/o Literature: Manifestations of Feminist and Gay Identities” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26 in the Ward room, Cartwright Center, UW-L. Álvarez studies the intersection of sexuality and faith in Chicano culture. Maru Buendía-Sentiés, a U.S.-Mexico Borderlands filmmaker, will present “Making Films on the U.S.– Mexico Border” at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17 in 260 Graff Main Hall, UW-L. Buendía-Sentiés work focuses on human rights and immigration. Her award-winning films have been featured in film festivals in Europe and the Americas. Her short film, “Bienvenido” (2010) portrays the struggle of a Mexican immigrant to overcome stereotypes. Her 2009 award-winning “Entre Líneas” is a story about two friends who live on different sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Buendia’s presentation will include the screening of the two films and discussion.
