A filmmaker and a scholar of Chicano culture will present as part of the activities planned in observance of National Hispanic Heritage month.
La Crosse, Wis. – A filmmaker and a scholar of Chicano culture will present as part of the activities planned in observance of National Hispanic Heritage month at UW-La Crosse.
Alma Rosa Álvarez, professor of English and writing at Southern Oregon University, will present “Liberation Theology in Chicana/o Literature: Manifestations of Feminist and Gay Identities” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26 in the Ward room, Cartwright Center, UW-L. Álvarez studies the intersection of sexuality and faith in Chicano culture.
Maru Buendía-Sentiés, a U.S.-Mexico Borderlands filmmaker, will present “Making Films on the U.S.– Mexico Border” at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17 in 260 Graff Main Hall, UW-L. Buendía-Sentiés work focuses on human rights and immigration. Her award-winning films have been featured in film festivals in Europe and the Americas. Her short film, “Bienvenido” (2010) portrays the struggle of a Mexican immigrant to overcome stereotypes. Her 2009 award-winning “Entre Líneas” is a story about two friends who live on different sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Buendia’s presentation will include the screening of the two films and discussion.
The U.S. observes National Hispanic Heritage month from Sept. 15 through Oct.15, celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America
