Alums give students in band a boost; join the UW-L Alumni Band for a fundraising event Aug. 17

UW-L Alumni Band members walking and playing. For years the UW-La Crosse Alumni Band has passed the hat among band members, collecting money to go to one dedicated, current member of the UW-L Screaming Eagles Marching Band. They’ve done well. Last year during the Maple Leaf Parade, they raised more than previous years — a total of $3,300. Now the alumni band would like to take their fundraising a step further. About $10,000 short of having an endowed scholarship, the band is picking up its fundraising this August with an event on campus. Join the UW-L Alumni Band for a fundraising event from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Aug. 17, at the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center Courtyard. Read more »

Longtime career matchmaker retires in August

Karla Stanek pictured at her desk. After her retirement in August, Karla Stanek will be cruising the hills of Napa Valley, Calif., with her former college roommates. The three women are always amazed at what Stanek remembers about her years at UW-La Crosse. Stanek, ’75 and ’80, says the UW-L memories aren’t hard to recall because she still lives them every day. UW-L is where she’s studied and worked since age 18 as an undergraduate and graduate student, employee in Career Services and eventually director of UW-L Career Services and the Academic Advising Center. Greg Reichert, UW-L's assistant chancellor of University Advancement, shared information from the latest issue of the Lantern alumni publication with donors at UW-L's Donor Appreciation event July 24 in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center.[/caption] Nearly three out of four students graduate from college with a significant amount of debt, Greg Reichert, UW-L's assistant chancellor of University Advancement, told a group of more than 150 at UW-L's Donor Appreciation Event July 24 in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. That's why UW-L has launched the "Share the La Crosse Experience Scholarship Campaign," he says. The campaign's focus is to raise money for scholarships to help students pay for college. That's also why the summer 2013 issue of UW-L's alumni publication the Lantern shares stories of how scholarships have helped UW-L students. UW-L student Keeley McConaughey, who's featured on the cover, was the recipient of three scholarships awarded to students at UW-L's April 29 Student Scholarship and Award Program. UW-L student, alumni theatre group presents 'Three Changes'

A dark comedy that explores the desperation that poverty spawns in individuals who are forced to cope with it opens Friday, Aug. 16, in Frederick Theatre, Morris Hall. The Happy Rain Theatre, a production company of UW-L Theatre students and alumni, will present "Three Changes" beginning at 7:30 p.m. Encore performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, and Saturday, Sept. 14. A a matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. Nate and Laurel, a seemingly perfect upper-middle class couple, have their lives turned upside down when Hal, Nate’s homeless older brother, fresh out of rehab, comes for a visit. What should have been a pleasant dinner and evening of drinks turns into months of Hal sleeping on the sofa. Unexpectedly, Gordon, a homeless 19-year-old friend of Hal’s, begs to join their unorthodox family. As time passes, Nate anxiously watches the power he once held over his household slip from his control; slowly becoming sick and weak after the loss of his job and the demands of Gordon and Hal. Playwright Nicky Silver captures the hearts of the audience with the realistic, if not lovable, characters while forcing them to question the importance of power, family and the need to live a “normal” life. Past Happy Rain Theatre productions include "Dog Sees God" and "Impassioned Embraces." The "Three Changes" production is supported by UW-L Theatre and a UW-L Undergraduate Research Grant. If you go— Who:  Happy Rain Theatre What: "Three Changes" by Nick Silver Where:  Frederick Theatre, Morris Hall When:  7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17, and Saturday, Sept. 14; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15 Admission: Free admission; donations welcome at the door Cast: Erica Bush, Kaylyn Forkey, Quinn Masterson, Connor O’Hara and Seth Von Steidl
