All proceeds from the annual event sponsored by the American Association of University Women go toward scholarships for area high school graduates and college students. Last summer the event raised $23,000, which was distributed in the form of scholarships to more than 20 area students to use this fall. The cultural event to support students continues this year. The 54th annual AAUW Art Fair on the Green runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 28, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 29, on the campus mall at 16th and State streets at UW-L. Ninety artists from the Midwest will display sculpture, jewelry, photography, woodwork, paintings, ceramics, glass art, fiber art, weaving, garden art, pottery mixed media and more. Everything is available for purchase except some student art on display. In addition to supporting the arts, the art fair is AAUW’s main fundraiser for scholarships, says AAUW member Betty Kruck. “It fits with the mission of AAUW to promote the welfare of young women and men,” says Pat Staupe, art fair chair. Among the scholarship recipients this spring was UW-L student Kali Kramolis who is busily working two part-time jobs as a nursing assistant and bartender this summer to help pay for school. She is grateful for the $1,000 scholarship. Extra funds mean she doesn’t have to continue her busy work schedule during the school year and can instead focus on pre-med studies, running hurdles with the track team, extra curricular activities and volunteering. I wouldn’t be able to do any of that if had to work full time.” The fair also includes concessions featuring People’s Food Coop selections, frozen cheesecake on a stick, fresh-squeezed lemonade, crepes and more. Inkapirka, an ethnic music group from Racine, will perform and a raffle will include 70 donated items. The art fair is judged and the top three pieces will receive a cash price. Children ages 12 and under are free. For those age 13 and up, the cost is $4. Tickets are good for both days.
