Graduating seniors to exhibit work at UW-L show

Six UW-La Crosse art students will celebrate the culmination of their undergraduate creative efforts in an upcoming exhibit. “End” is the title of this year’s fall senior exhibition in the University Art Gallery on the first floor of the Center for the Arts. The exhibit opens with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Commencement is Sunday, Dec. 16

UW-L's 2012 Winter Commencement will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in the La Crosse Center, 300 Harborview Plaza. UW-L has 543 undergraduate candidates for graduation and 129 graduate students. Doors open at 9 a.m.  A reception for graduates, friends and family will be held immediately after in the South Hall. UW-L senior Liz Rosendale will give the keynote address at the graduation ceremony. “I feel like it’s a natural response when you experience something that changes or moves you, you want to share that. UW-L definitely changed me,” she says. Rosendale says college made her learn to be passionate about the subjects she is — particularly physics, education and creating music with the UW-L Screaming Eagles Marching Band. Rosendale is accustomed to sharing her love for the university via her role as a campus Vanguard. She says the keynote address will be an extension of that. During her keynote, she plans to make some connections between college and “The Wizard of OZ,” particularly along the lines of how people grow in courage, intelligence and heart through the college experience. Rosendale’s major is physics education. She is currently student teaching at Melrose-Mindoro Area High School. She plans to eventually teach at the middle school or high school level. 20th annual Festival of Carols at UW-L Dec. 15

The 20th annual Festival of Carols will feature a holiday carol extravaganza at UW-La Crosse. This year’s performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition, will feature four choirs and the UW-L Orchestra. The performing choirs include the UW-L Concert Choir and Mannerchor, conducted by Gary Walth; Women’s Chorus, conducted by Kathryn Moran; and the Chamber Choir, conducted by Terence Kelly. The UW-L Orchestra, conducted by J. Thomas Seddon, will also perform. Campus Connection end-of-year schedule

The last day of classes is Wednesday, Dec. 12. Final exams begin Friday, Dec. 14, and run through Wednesday, Dec. 19.

Open forums for library director candidates to be held Dec. 10, 12 and 17

During the next two weeks, three finalists for the director of Murphy Library position interview on campus. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend open forums with each candidate and provide comments to the search and screen committee. History Student Research Symposium set for Dec. 10

UW-L's History Department is showcasing undergraduates' research at the Fall 2012 UW-L History Student Symposium Monday, Dec. 10. The students' work is a culmination of their experience as UW-L history majors that ends in a capstone history research seminar. Chancellor’s Holiday Luncheon to be held Dec. 13; tickets on sale through Dec. 11

UW-L’s Concert Choir will perform at this year’s Chancellor’s Holiday Luncheon. The luncheon will be held Thursday, Dec. 13, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The menu includes:

• Carved roast beef with au jus
• Chicken Roulade with wild rice, mushrooms and bacon
• Oven roasted red potatoes
• Ceasar Salad
• Heavenly Hash
• Roasted acorn squash slices
• Zucchini, green and red pepper medley
• Cheesecake

Psychedelics is topic of Dec. 17 bioresearch forum

UW-L Chemistry Professor Aaron Monte will present "Psychedelics Revisited: Structures, Activities and New Clinical Applications" from 12:15-1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, for the monthly La Crosse BioResearch Forum. Forums are held in the Overholt Auditorium, Gundersen Lutheran. The free forums are open to the public and are hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Those attending should park in the Green ramp (see map) or use valet parking. Use the entrances at the north end and northeast side of the medical center.

Sharon Radtke retirement reception set for Dec. 19

A retirement reception will be held for Sharon Radtke, assistant Vice Chancellor for Budget and Finance, from 2–4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, in Port O’Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Radtke came to UW-La Crosse from UW-Stevens Point in 1988 and is retiring after 34 years of service in the UW System. The campus community is invited to attend Radtke's retirement reception.

UW-L is offering an action-packed sports camp for children ages 5-12. The camp runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, and Friday, Dec. 28, in Mitchell Hall. Drop off children from 8-9 a.m. Pick them up between 4-5 p.m. Exercise and Sport Science Senior Lecturer Lori Petersen and volunteer students from physical education and other majors on campus lead the camp. Children can participate in age-appropriate activities in both competitive and non-competitive groups. Cost for those who register by Monday, Dec. 17, is $25 per day. Help save energy between semesters with these tips

With many off campus after final exams, the period between fall and spring semesters offers an opportunity to reduce campus energy consumption. To help conserve energy without impacting programs or services, Facilities Planning and Management asks everyone to take the following actions:

• Turn off computers, monitors, printers, peripherals and other non-essential office, classroom and laboratory equipment.
• Turn off all table lamps, general room lighting and other electrical items.
• Unplug and clean unused refrigerators; block the door slightly ajar to reduce odor buildup.
• Unplug chargers when they’re not charging. They draw energy whenever they’re plugged-in.
• Close shades, blinds and curtains during unoccupied periods. Encourage others to reduce energy use.

The FurLow Riders take the stage to help raise funds for RAQ radio station

The kick-off event for the year helped raise awareness about the station, online at RAQradio.com. An event raffle also raised funds for RAQ thanks to donations from local companies including: Jimbo's Guitar, Leithold Music, Howie's Bar & Restaurant, Cost Cutters and Iguana's. The raffle and donation bucket raised $190 toward station equipment. Eventually, the station would like to raise enough funds have a low FM signal, organize more shows and sponsor more events for the La Crosse community. Those who want to get involved with the station or have their own show during spring 2013 should contact general managers Katie Couture and Jordy Foy at broadcast@uwlax.edu.

LTE office support recruitment now on PeopleAdmin

Beginning Monday, Dec. 10, the LTE Office Support recruitment is on the electronic recruitment and application system, PeopleAdmin. PeopleAdmin was implemented a few years ago and is currently used for the recruitment of faculty and academic staff (unclassified) positions. With the University Personnel System being put into place in the 2013-14 fiscal year, along with HR's continuous efforts to use sustainable practices, UW-L will be move all other classified recruitment to PeopleAdmin in the summer of 2013. Spring semester reappointment information to be emailed Dec. 10

Spring semester 2013 academic staff contracts will be emailed to employees' campus email accounts Monday, Dec. 10. Receiving contracts via email is part of Human Resources commitment to the university‘s sustainability efforts. For employees with an appointment that will end December and who have insurance with UW-L, COBRA information will be sent to home addresses. COBRA allows former employees to continue the insurance, however there is no employer contribution. Verify home address information on earning statements located on the MY UW System Portal and complete the address change form if necessary. Thanks to everyone who donated to trick-or-treat for cans fundraiser

Carla Burkhardt, College of Science and Health; and Cecilia Manrique, Political Science/Public Administration; together with their UWL 100 Freshman Seminar class,  thank everyone in Wimberly and Centennial halls who contributed to trick-or-treat for cans Oct. 31.
