A great example of how UW-La Crosse faculty and students are engaging in the community is the Hear, Here project. This collection of audio recordings of oral histories in downtown La Crosse can be accessed by dialing a toll-free number at orange street signs.

UWL Associate Professor of History Ariel Beaujot and her students started the Hear, Here project with 28 stories in 2015. It has since branched out to include many more stories, poetry and partnerships with other UWL departments, K-12 education and community organizations.

“They [students] are creating something that has become a national-award-winning project. So, while they are also writing term papers and taking exams and all of the things they do, they are also creating this thing that will affect and change the community.”

This video about the project was shared with the UW System Board of Regents during their visit to campus in December. It was then shared again at the Chancellor Joe Gow’s All-University Address Wednesday, Jan. 23.
