Hear from a student about their experience abroad.
“Studying abroad in Milan, Italy, was an incredibly enriching experience for me. I had the opportunity to delve into business and fashion courses, which not only expanded my academic horizons but also provided insights into different educational systems. One aspect that surprised me was the contrast in academic workload compared to my home institution. Instead of drowning in assignments, we focused on one final exam and a significant project, allowing me to absorb the material more deeply. One of the aspects I cherished most about school in Milan was the vibrant social scene. Witnessing students gather for coffee breaks, wine, or aperitivo during breaks fostered a sense of community and openness. It was heartwarming to see everyone enjoying each other’s company and embracing the Italian tradition of socializing.
The cultural diversity among my peers was fascinating. Interacting with friends from various backgrounds highlighted the diversity in learning experiences and study habits across different countries. It was eye-opening to witness how walking to class amidst the picturesque scenery was a norm, contrasting sharply with the car-centric lifestyle back home.
Adjusting to the new environment, atmosphere, and culture was initially challenging, but having roommates from diverse backgrounds, including locals, helped immensely. Their admiration for my curiosity about Italian culture encouraged me to immerse myself further. Overcoming homesickness and fear by embracing risks and seeking help was pivotal. Making mistakes became part of the learning journey, fostering personal growth and resilience.
Overall, my academic journey in Milan was both enlightening and transformative. It taught me the importance of embracing new experiences, stepping out of my comfort zone, and cherishing cultural diversity. To future students considering studying abroad, I would encourage them to embrace the unknown, be open to making mistakes, and immerse themselves fully in the rich tapestry of experiences that await them.”
