Your predeparture checklist should have a spot for your mental health!
When traveling somewhere new, it is vital to take your mental health into consideration. Education abroad for any amount of time is a major change and it can have an impact on your mental health. One of the first steps is to discuss with your medical provider or with the Counseling and Testing center on campus to see if education abroad is going to be the right option for you.
Next, do ample research on your location before you move there. See what resources are available to you on the campus and within the community. You will then want to research what options we have for education abroad. If you would like to be with a group of people and have multiple support systems along the way, explore our provider programs. With provider programs, you get support from our office, your provider, and whatever university you attend. If you prefer independence and freedom to make your experience abroad all your own, then check out our exchange or direct enroll programs. These programs still have support from our office and whichever university abroad, but the program is self-driven.
Once you have decided where you want to go and you land safely in that country, remember that you will experience culture shock and it is OKAY! The world around us is diverse and unique. That is what makes education abroad so special. Research beforehand can aid you in fitting in with the customs and traditions of the places you visit. Do not pass up the opportunity to make connections with the locals. These connections will provide an even greater insight into the community; these connections will make your experience personal.
Wherever and whenever you choose to pursue education abroad, UWL International Education and Engagement is here to support you through the process. Check out the links below for more information.
